Don Rostow has spent his life in service-first to children and families as a pediatrician, and now to culture and community as a dedicated volunteer photographer with the Hawaiian Institute for Musical Enrichment and Learning Experiences (HIMELE).
Born in New Jersey, Don's journey took him through Rutgers University, medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, and pediatric training at Vanderbilt and Montefiore. He then spent over three decades practicing pediatrics in San Diego before retiring and moving to Honolulu to begin what he calls the "third half" of his life-focused on creativity, community, and giving back.
Photography, once a hobby, has become a meaningful pursuit. His connection to HIMELE began through longtime friend and former HIMELE Board member Don Touchi, who had been photographing HIMELE events and invited Don to assist with an event in Waikīkī. When Don Touchi decided to step away, he asked Don Rostow to take over. What started as a favor turned into a deeply fulfilling volunteer commitment.
Though Don doesn't play music himself, he's become a passionate supporter of HIMELE's mission to preserve and promote the Hawaiian steel guitar. "I never got the music gene," he says, "but I'm in awe when I see people take a box with strings and make beautiful music." He believes strongly in Alan Akaka and HIMELE's cause to sustain the steel guitar as a vital part of Hawai‘i's cultural identity.
Over the years, Don has not only captured performances through his lens but also watched many students grow and evolve—not just musically, but in their confidence and presence on stage. He's also built friendships with many of the professional musicians who regularly perform at HIMELE events.
Beyond HIMELE, Don volunteers his photography skills to local charities such as Special Olympics and remains active in several Honolulu photo clubs, which form the core of his social life. Whether it's through his camera or his quiet commitment to community, Don continues to document and support the people and traditions that make Hawai‘i unique. Mahalo Don for your commitment to HIMELE!
